The check engine light is a fundamental component of any vehicle. It’s also one that many people still have some level of confusion about. What does it mean? What does it come on? Well, today, we hope to eliminate the confusion about this matter. That way, the next time it starts blinking, you’ll hopefully have a better understanding of why.

Check Engine Light

The Rate of Flashing

Determining the severity of the issue your car might be experiencing can sometimes be discovered simply by paying attention to the consistency and rate of flashing that the check engine light is exhibiting.

Consistent Light – If you find that your check engine light is constantly on when you’re operating your vehicle, it’s usually an indication that while an issue is present and should be addressed soon, it’s normally one that’s relatively minimal.

Flashing Light – While you should never panic when the check engine light comes on, if it’s flashing consistently or erratically, this means that the issue iOS more serious and should be attended to immediately. Sometimes a flashing light can indicate a misfiring engine. No matter what the cause might be, it’s important that you pull over immediately and have your vehicle towed to a service station.

Five Common Explanations for a Check Engine Light Coming On

Loose or Damaged Gas Cap – A missing gas cap or one that’s not sealing properly is a relatively easy fix. Sometimes a replacement isn’t even necessary; it just needs to be screwed on a little tighter.

Catalytic Converter – An issue with your vehicle’s catalytic converter can be easily detected with a brief diagnostic test. More often than not, an issue arises due to a lack of maintenance.

Airflow Sensor – Your engine’s intake of air is essential to its operation. The airflow sensor measures how much is being taken in and delivered to your powertrain. This is another easy fix that can be done by a mechanic doing a diagnostic test.

Oxygen Sensor – Another issue that can be detected by a diagnostics test, the oxygen sensor is imperative to the efficiency of your exhaust system. A faulty sensor can have a direct impact on the MPG of your vehicle.

Spark Plug Wires – Your spark plugs are an integral part of your vehicle’s ignition system. Their wires can become ineffective in cases of extreme heat or cold, as well as the leaking of oil or coolant inside your vehicle.
